BASIC SEARCH

The basic search is as simple as a piece of cake:

1. Use the radio buttons in the search box to select search base (Ukraine, Kharkov, Abroad). The default is Ukraine base;
2. Type your keyword(s) in the search box;
3. Press Enter (the Search&Find button to start your search).

USUAL SEARCH

As a rule, the query consists of one or more words, for example:

      quick search of information

After this kind of query you will recieve the documents where all the words which occur in the query will be found. The exceptions are: conjunctions, prepositions, interjections etc. You cannot include these words into query. They will be ignored (look through the list of stop words). For example, according to our query:
      quick search of information
all the documents, that include the words "quick", "search" and "information" will be found. It is not important were the words found and what grammar form they have in the documents (for a query in the Russian and Ukrainian languages). The word "of" is a preposition and will be ignored. So, the mentioned query can be written as:

     Information quick search
     or
     Search quick information

The result of the search will be the same as in the first case.
Pay attention to the following property of the search engine while searching in Russian or Ukrainian: independently from grammar form of your words in the query it will be found in the documents in all presented forms. For example:

     child went (ребенок шел (Rus), дитина йшла(Ukr))

children go (дети идут (Rus), діти йдуть(Ukr)) will be found among all the other documents. Form recognition works only for common words of the Russian and Ukrainian languages. As for some specific words, terms, neologisms it will not work.

ADVANCED SEARCH

You can create specific relationships among keywords or phrases using (brackets), OR, NOT, AND.

Operators Synonyms Description
AND

Rus: И
Ukr: ТА
&
+

Logic AND is implied and it can be omitted. It means that the query information system is equivalents to query information AND system. According to these queries the documents that include both of the words will be found.
AND operator defines the field of your search.
OR Rus: ИЛИ
Ukr: АБО
|
Logic OR allows to search the the documents, that include even one of the words from the query. So, according to the query information OR system all the documents including any of the mentioned words or both ones will be found.
OR operator broadens the field of your search.
NOT Rus/Ukr: НЕ
-
Logic NOT narrows the search by the documents, that do not include the words mentioned after the operator. For example, according to the query drink NOT coffee the documents will be found that include the word "drink", but exclude the word "coffee".
NOT operator narrows the field of your search.

( )

  Brackets set the action order of logic operators.
For example, you introduce the query quick OR quality search. According to such a query you will receive the documents, that include either the word "quick", or the word "quality" and "search" (because operator AND is implied and acts first. And if you write the query (quick OR quality) search, you will receive the documents, where the words "quick" and "search", or "quality" and "search" are present.

A second operators group allows to set distance between keywords.

Operators Synonyms Description
" "   Inverted commas marks permit to find the combination of words, mentioned in them, or very close to them. The last reservation is fixed together with two circumstances. First, stop words (prepositions, conjunctions, etc) in quotation marks are ignored as in a simple query. Second, the grammar form of the words is not fixed by such a quotation marks. For example, according to the query "weather in the Crimea" the document, that include further combinations of words "weather and Crimea", "weather Crimea" " etc. will be found.
w2(...) Rus: сл2(...)
Ukr: с2(...)
[2,...]
Distance limit in words (2 is mentioned as example). If you want the words mentioned by you to meet, for example within the limits of 5 words, you should write: w5 (sun wind water). After this, the documents in which between "sun", "wind" and "water" there is fewer than 2 other words (it means, that the whole number of words in fragment is fewer than 5) will be found. The order of the words is not important.
s2(...) Rus: пp2(...)
Ukr: реч2(...)
{2,...}
Distance limitation in sentences (2 is mentioned as an example). If you want to require, that the words mentioned by you to meet in the range of 1 sentence, you should write s1(sun wind water).

Another widespread case -- search by URL of servers .

Operator Synonyms Description
url= url: Search limitation by one or several servers, or even by part of a server. Here are some examples:

Example 1. Query:

url=www.kharkiv.com

Due to this query all the documents, indexed by the server will be given out. In this case the document will be given out accidentally.

Example 2. Query:

url=www.kharkiv.com & references & information

Due to this query all the documents of www.kharkiv.com server that include word "references" and "information" will be shown.

Example 3. Query:

url=www.kharkiv.com/assistance/*

Due to this query all the documents, indexed by META on www.kharkiv.com server in directory "assistance" and its subdirectories will be given out.

Example 4. Query:

url=*.kharkiv.com

Due to this query all the documents, indexed by search engine on servers kharkiv.com, users.kharkiv.com, etc. will be given out. Such a queries can be worked out quite for a long time. You should not give query as *.ua, because hundreds of thousand documents will not provide you with necessary information and system can abort returning you the results of the search.

Besides mentioned above you can use specialized operators -- truncating and normal form.

Operators Synonym Description
*   Truncation operator. Asterisk in the end of the word replaces (substitute) any number of any letters. So, due to the query new*, inspite of "news" all the documents, that include words "newscast", "newspaper", "newsprint" and other begining with "new" will be found.
!   Operator of normal form (only for Russian and Ukrainian search). Sometimes some forms of different words are equal in spelling. For example, the word "лада" (lada) - is normal form of the noun of feminine gender - in genitive case of the word "лад" (lad). In order to remove such an ambiguity you can place an exclamation mark (!) before the word in the query. By this you underline, that is the normal form, and you cut off some part of unnecessary forms of the words and narrow the result of the search. So, due to the query !лад (!lad) word-form ладой (ladoj) will not be found out because only the noun of feminine gender лада (lada) has it.

SEARCH WITH PARAMETERS

Unlike the operators of advanced search, that determinate relations between keywords, the search with parameters allows to limit the search area in the time of creating and a few of documents fields as well.

Operator for time limitation:

Operator Synonyms Description
date= Rus: дата:
Ukr: дата=
date:
This operator can narrow the search only by the documents, that are in the given date interval. Here are some examples:

Example 1. Query:

Ukraine date=01/01/99-01/02/99

Due to this query all the documents, that include the word "Ukraine" and are dated from 01/01/99 to 01/02/99 will be given out.

Example 2. Query:

date=01/01/99 Ukraine

Due to this query all the documents, that include the word "Ukraine", and have the date 01/01/99 will be given out.

Example 2. Query:

data:<01/02/99 Ukraine
or
data:-01/02/99 Ukraine

Due to this query all the documents, that include the word "Ukraine", and have the date not later than 01/02/99 will be given out.

Operators for search in fields of www-documents:

Operators Synonyms Description

заг=
title=

kw=

Rus: кл=
Ukr: клсл=
keywords=

L= Rus/Ukr: cc=
link=
Indicated after the sign of equality the name of the internet-server will be searched out in the references, that are present in HTML-documents. This kind of search is provided only in such references, where the whole name of the server is given (link to the concrete file is ignored). Due to this query L=www.kharkiv.com all the documents in which there are references within www.kharkiv.com, but only in case if the whole URL of the server is mentioned will be found.
c= Rus: ком=
Ukr: к=
comment=

text= текст=
x=
т=

By default the words of the query are searched out either in the text or in all the fields mentioned before. In order to search only in the text, that you see in the browser window, you should use this operator. Due to the query text=(summation or commentaries) all the documents, in which any of the mentioned words was found within the main text of the document will be shown.

Another, a little faster way for limitation search area is to jump to ADVANCED SEARCH and define desired filters.
